Yahoo’s board hired ex-PayPal executive Scott Thompson as its new CEO just weeks ago. It’s not clear whether Yang may be unhappy with the new Yahoo world order or, after a tough year searching for buyers, partners and CEOs, simply wishes to leave Yahoo to be someone else’s problem.
Before Bartz’s hire, Yang served as CEO between June 2007 and January 2009, replacing Terry Semel. These were tough times for Yahoo, with disappointing returns, job cuts, market share loss, and regular calls for Yang’s ousteAfter Yahoo’s board fired ex-CEO Carol Bartz in September, it was widely rumored that Yang wished to purchase the company outright. After soliciting bids for a minority purchase in the company, activist shareholders cried foul, arguing that the board had rigged the big structure to force potential buyers to work with Yang and co-founder David Filo.

Wikipedia:shut down for 24 hours on Wednesday to protest against SOPA

While only the English version of the site will be down, it accounts for 25 million daily visitors according to Wales:

When we talked to Wales in November, he told us that Wikipedia had over 420m unique monthly visitors, and there are now over 20 million articles on Wikipedia across almost 300 languages.

As we reported last week, the site was contemplating taking this action along with Reddit who announced that it would black out its site in protest against SOPA.

The 24 hour shutdown of Wikipedia will be replaced with instructions on how to reach out to your local US members of congress, and Wales says he hopes the measure will “melt phones” with volume:

Along with Reddit, Wikipedia joins huge Internet names like WordPress, Mozilla, and all of the Cheezburger properties in Wednesday’s “black out” protest.

The proposed act endangers the future of sites like these by holding them directly accountable for content placed on them. It has been widely reported that if an act like this passed through and became actionable, many Internet businesses would suffer greatly due to new scrutiny placed on them by the government.

facebook : Lets You Listen to Music With Your Friends

Facebook began rolling out a new feature today in which users can listen, using Spotify or other music streaming services, to the same songs as their friends and chat about it as they listen.

The new feature’s pretty dead simple to use. Just look for someone listening to music in Facebook’s chat sidebar, hover over them, and click the “Listen With” button. It’ll open up the streaming service on your machine and let you listen in real time. It also integrates with chat, letting you talk about the music you’re listening to, and even letting other people join in to listen to one person DJ (almost like previously mentioned Turntable.fm, but not as cool or flexible). Bing :Surpasses Yahoo in Search Market

Well, that didn’t take long. Bing, Microsoft’s three-year-old search engine, has officially edged out ahead of Yahoo, according to the latest data from ComScore.

In December, Yahoo dropped 0.6 percentage points over the previous months, giving Microsoft a slight lead,
despite the fact that Bing didn’t grow that much during the same time period.

Bing now commands 15.1% of the search market, while Yahoo has dropped to 14.5%. It’s not even a full percentage point, but this is the first time Yahoo has been ousted by Microsoft for that #2 slot behind Google.

Tim Cook : Top paid CEO of year 2011

Tim Cook could well end up being the highest paid CEO in America in 2011, after Apple Inc. granted him a million restricted stock units last August for taking the reins shortly before co-founder Steve Jobs died.

An Associated Press review of a securities filing shows Cook’s pay package was valued at $378 million. The vast majority came in a grant of a million restricted stock units worth $376 million at the time. Half of the stock units will vest in August 2016, the other half in August 2021.

His salary and performance bonus, about $900,000 each, made up much of the rest. He also made

$16,520 from company contributions to a 401(k) retirement account and company-paid life insurance premiums.

In comparison, Jobs accepted a $1 annual salary for years and owned about 5.5 million shares, worth about $2.3 billion today.
Cook’s award is well above that given to Philippe Dauman, the Viacom Inc. chief executive who led the top paid CEOs of 2010 with an $84.5 million haul based on a new contract that granted him shares and stock options.In total, Cook has about 1.36 million restricted shares that haven’t yet vested and 13,754 regular shares worth a combined $580 million, the filing showed.

Cook’s pay package was also valued at more than all of the next nine highest paid CEOs of 2010 combined, or about $356 million.

Apple said that its compensation goal is to encourage long-term results above short-term risk-taking, and the 51-year-old former chief operating officer won’t begin to reap the actual benefits of the stock award for another four years.

But Securities and Exchange Commission rules compel companies t

o book a share grant’s value in the year it is granted, making Cook’s whopper of a pay package unlikely to be beat.

Apple said it raised the bonus target to keep its executive pay more in line with that of other technology and entertainment peers like Google Inc. or The Walt Disney Co.d that the company also decided in November to raise his base annual salary to $1.4 million and double the bonus target for paid executives to 100 percent of their annual salary.

The filing was released the same day Apple shares reached a new high in midday trading, briefly hitting $427.75 before falling back to close at $421.73.

Britney Spears Surpasses One Million Google+ Followers

More than a million Google+ users are keeping tabs on Britney Spears, who continues to be one of the most popular human beings on social networks.

She is currently the first and only person to crack seven figures.

In reaching the milestone, Spears beat Google CEO Larry Page and rapper / spiritual adviser (seriously, his Google Plus bio says that) Snoop Dogg.

Not even six months old, Google Plus is already making a name for itself, although we’re guessing Jason Alexander is not one of the 1,078,900 following her there.

Those followers pale in comparison to her 15.7 million Facebook fans and 11.9 million Twitter followers – two million of whom started following her since October.

Oh well, give it time, Google Plus. We have faith.

Facebook Sponsered stories : Sponsered stories now in your news feed

Back in November, we’d reported that Facebook will be soon introducing sponsored stories in its news ticker. Well, Facebook is expanding its sponsored stories again. Starting in January 2012, Facebook will be featuring ads or sponsored stories in the main news feed in the web version of the social networking site. Facebook had stopped displaying ads in the main news feed long back in 2008, thus the new move is likely to be a big boost for the advertisers.

“Starting early next year, we will gradually begin showing Sponsored Stories in News Feed,” a spokesperson for Facebook said in a statement. “Our goal is to do this thoughtfully and slowly. We hope to show people no more than one Sponsored Story in their News Feeds per day and the story will be clearly labeled.”

The sponsored stories that would appear in the News Feed would be based on stories or Pages that you and your friends have already liked. The new move is aimed at engaging more users with the ads and sponsored items on the social networking. Users may not opt out of seeing sponsored items in the news feed, though they can unsubscribe certain ads. However, users may not remove ads of the Page they have already liked.

Facebook’s new move is likely to trigger backlash from many users, who wish not to see the ads or have their news feed. Facebook was recently slammed by the US’ FTC for its privacy policies. This is why the company is looking to integrate the ads slowly. Moreover, Facebook is likely to ensure the sponsored stories look similar to the regular news feed content, which will not disturb several users.

You can now delegate up to 50 named managers as administrators for a page.
A new notification flow will ensure that these managers stay in the loop on all the activity that takes place on a page, giving managers the ability to stay involved in page conversations.
We’ll now show an aggregated count of users that have engaged with your page, either by +1’ing it or by adding it to a circle. This way, both you and your page’s visitors can get an at-a-glance summary of who is interacting with your page.

facebook Timeline : How to get new facebook timeline

Most awaited facebook timeline has finally realsed for all user. few step to get it.

Easy Method, No Editing:

Go here.
Click “Get Timeline.” There. It’s enabled, but not published yet.
Click “Publish Now.” You’re done.

Still Easy, Edit Before Anyone Sees It:

1. Be sure you’re logged into your Facebook account.

2. Go to the About Timeline page.

3. Click on “Get Timeline.”

4. Scroll down on your timeline and edit or remove any items you don’t want shown. Do that by holding your cursor over the upper right of the item you want to edit, and then make your choice on the drop-down list.

5. From that list you can change the date of the item, add a location, hide it from the timeline, delete the post altogether, or report it/mark it as spam.

6. If you’d like to “feature” any of the posts, click on the star icon to the left of that pencil icon, and that item will be expanded all the way across the page, made larger for all your friends to see.

7. Once you’re satisfied with all the edits you’ve made, either go back to the top of the Timeline and click “Publish Now,” or do nothing and it’ll be automatically published on December 22.
